Throughout their learning journey at Elmstead Primary school, pupils will be exposed to a progressive, practical and an inspiring science curriculum. We have designed our science curriculum to develop a sense of excitement, curiosity and fascination about natural phenomena that will remain with the children for the rest of their lives. 

In each year group pupils will complete most of their scientific learning through practical tasks and will have the opportunity to set up and carry out investigations regularly. The expectation is that this will be at least one a half term, meaning over the academic year pupils will have completed a minimum of six investigations. These working scientifically skills will be carefully observed for assessment purposes. Over their primary school experience pupils will have the opportunity to go on scientific based trips but will also be offered other experiences such as taking part in workshops.

The objectives covered are taught from the National Curriculum and have been organised into a progression of skills document to ensure that all areas of learning are covered across each year group. Prior learning links will be made between overlapping topics and will be built upon for example plants are taught in year 1 and then built upon in years 2 and 3. 

Within each lesson children will have access to scientific word banks where they will be expected to use language from this within their scientific responses. Pupils will also be asked three starter questions at the beginning of each lesson where they will recall their learning from the previous year, previous topic and previous week.
